EDPMS Explained: What Every Exporter Must Know About Export Data Processing and Monitoring System

If you are an exporter in India, you have likely heard the term EDPMS — but do you fully understand what it means and how it affects your banking transactions?

What is EDPMS?

EDPMS stands for Export Data Processing and Monitoring System. It is a platform launched by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to monitor and track export transactions by Indian exporters.

Every time you ship goods out of India, the shipping bill is automatically uploaded to EDPMS by the customs authorities. Your bank can then see this data and match it against the payment you receive from your foreign buyer.

Why Does EDPMS Matter for Exporters?

Under FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act), every exporter is required to realize and repatriate export proceeds within a specified time period — currently 9 months from the date of shipment for most goods.

If payment is not received within this period, the export shipment shows as an outstanding entry in EDPMS. This is called an EDPMS outstanding entry and it can create serious compliance issues for your business.

What Happens if Your EDPMS Entry is Not Closed?

  • Your bank will issue reminders for outstanding entries
  • RBI caution listing may be initiated for habitual defaulters
  • Future export finance facilities may be affected
  • You may face scrutiny under FEMA

How is an EDPMS Entry Closed?

An EDPMS entry is closed when the exporter submits the inward remittance details along with a declaration to their bank. The bank verifies and marks the shipping bill as realized in EDPMS. Importantly, since February 2024, exporters can self-generate the eBRC (Electronic Bank Realization Certificate) directly on the DGFT portal — without waiting for their bank to issue it.

Key Takeaway

EDPMS is not just a banking formality — it is a compliance requirement every exporter must take seriously. Keep track of your outstanding shipping bills and ensure payments are received within the stipulated time.
